│ In the 1980s, the gutbucket, in-your-face style of funk │
│ known as go-go was a phenomenon in Washington, D.C., where │
│ EU, Trouble Funk, Chuck Brown & the Soul Searchers, Rare │
│ Essence and others could compete with Run-D.M.C. in terms │
│ of popularity. But sadly, go-go enjoyed little more than a │
│ cult following elsewhere. In 1987, EU had a taste of │
│ national exposure with their addictive, overtly │
│ '70s-influenced hit "Da Butt," which was atypical of the │
│ band's work for Virgin Records. Hoping for more national │
│ success, the band strayed from their roots and turned to a │
│ more high-tech "urban contemporary" approach with often │
│ disappointing results. Though not a horrible album, Cold │
│ Kickin' It pales in comparison to EU's earlier gems. The │
│ CD's strongest offerings include the Philly-ish soul │
│ ballad "Got to Be Wherever You Are" and the reggae number │
│ "M-O-N-E-Y." Meanwhile, the more go-go-oriented offerings │
│ "Funky like a Monkey," "Let It Go" and "Hot Cakes" │
│ underscore the problem with EU going high-tech ù keyboards │
│ and drum machines simply can't take the place of the horns │
│ and percussion that are more prominent on earlier │
│ recordings. When EU allowed themselves to be smothered by │
│ technology, their appeal greatly decreased. │
